Abstract

Women play a crucial role in the creation and drive of social and community change, especially in rural and geographically under-resourced areas. They play an important role in the areas of education, economic activity, local governance and community organization in relation to sustainable development and social change. Women have traditionally been important stakeholders in agriculture, livestock management, household economies and community welfare in the district of Kishtwar in the Himalayas of Jammu and Kashmir. But, their contributions have not been recognized enough in the past because of the patriarchy and unequal distribution of resources. This study reflects the role of Women in the process of community transformation with Gender point of view in Kishtwar District. The paper, using the Gender and Development (GAD) framework and the Capability Approach, examines the role of women's involvement in education, livelihoods, self-help groups and local governance bodies in the overall social transformation processes. Secondary data has been used in the study and it has been collected from Census reports, government publications, development reports and scholarly literature. According to census data, the area of Kishtwar is still mostly rural with around 93.6 percent of the population living in rural areas and the literacy rate of women is still lower than that of men, reflecting gender gaps. Despite these problems, there are growing numbers of women involved in CBOs, livelihood activities and local decision-making that help to enhance the capacity of local development. The study is that further improvement of women's education, economic opportunities, and leadership opportunities is central to inclusive and sustainable development. This paper draws on the Kishtwar District and adds to the recent literature on gender, empowerment and transformation in the Himalayas, highlighting the need for gender responsive development policies.
